Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (Avionics) are integral to NZ's aviation safety and operational system. Licensed avionics AMEs inspect, repair, and certify the navigation, communication, flight management, and electronic systems that keep NZ's commercial, regional, and private aviation fleet airworthy. Air New Zealand — the country's primary carrier — operates its own line and heavy maintenance operations and consistently recruits avionics engineers internationally. Regional airlines (Air Nelson, Mount Cook Airline), helicopter operators, agricultural aviation firms, and specialist MRO providers all require licensed avionics personnel. Added to the NZ Green List Tier 1 in April 2024, this is notably one of the few Tier 1 occupations at ANZSCO Skill Level 3 (trade qualification). Qualified avionics AMEs can apply for NZ residence directly with a job offer from an accredited employer — a significant pathway for experienced aviation tradespeople.
Salaries are based on NZ market data. Regional and rural positions may offer allowances, relocation support, and retention bonuses in addition to base salary.

NZ CAA has formal conversion pathways for licences from EASA (EU/UK), CASA (Australia), FAA (US), and several other aviation authorities. The degree of direct recognition vs. required exams depends on your specific licence category, type endorsements, and experience. Contact CAA NZ for a formal assessment before applying for roles.
Yes. You can work under the supervision of a NZ-licensed certifying engineer while your own licence conversion is in progress. Many NZ employers structure their offers to accommodate this — particularly Air New Zealand and larger MRO operators who are experienced in hiring overseas AMEs.
