About This Occupation in New Zealand

⭐ Green List Tier 1 — Straight to Residence

This occupation qualifies for direct New Zealand residence. With a job offer from an accredited employer and the right qualifications, you can apply for residence immediately — no need to wait two years.

Surgeons are among the most critically needed specialists in New Zealand's public health system. Long waiting lists for elective surgery — including orthopaedic, general, and vascular procedures — reflect the significant specialist surgeon shortage facing Te Whatu Ora hospitals nationwide. General Surgeons (ANZSCO 253511) and specialist surgeons in fields including orthopaedics, vascular, neurosurgery, plastics, ENT, and urology are all in demand. Green List Tier 1 status allows eligible Fellows to gain NZ residence directly with a specialist position at an accredited employer. New Zealand offers surgeons an excellent quality of life, lower on-call burden than comparable countries, and a collegial specialist community.

NZ Salary Range for Surgeon (General & Specialist)

NZ$250,000 – NZ$500,000+
Specialist surgeons in high-demand fields (orthopaedics, neurosurgery, vascular) command the highest remuneration. Private practice adds significantly to public income.

Salaries are based on NZ market data. Regional and rural positions may offer allowances, relocation support, and retention bonuses in addition to base salary.
