Is Tax Accountant on the NZ Green List? — FAQs

Can a Tax Accountant get an AEWV in New Zealand?

Yes. Tax Accountant (ANZSCO 221113) is ANZSCO Skill Level 1, qualifying for a 5-year AEWV with no English test required. You need a job offer from an INZ-accredited employer paying at least NZ$35.00/hr.

Do I need to know NZ tax law to get a job as a tax accountant?

NZ tax law knowledge helps but most NZ accounting firms expect to provide on-the-job NZ tax training to overseas-qualified accountants. Strong general tax skills (corporate income tax, GST/VAT, FBT, international tax) are highly transferable. Australian tax experience is particularly valued due to similarities with NZ law.

Is there demand for tax accountants in NZ?

Yes — Big Four and mid-tier accounting firms in Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch consistently recruit international tax accountants. Specialist areas (transfer pricing, international tax, R&D tax credits, property tax) have the strongest demand and highest salaries.
